or happiness. This male is called the feminist male.
THE FEMINIST MALE This modern Black male would best be described as the forerunner of the “Feminist Male.” Present day America plays up the “Metrosexual” man, but the feminist male would be a better term for the modern man of America. With the rise of the feminist movement, White America is now beginning to see social trends that look quite similar to traditional Black families. Men, Black or White, are no longer seen as providers, protectors, or leaders. Roughly three generations of men have been reared in households where both parents work. Women have the right to pursue career, hobbies, then family if they so choose. With these gains, they must understand that men have accepted women as being financially independent individuals that must pull their own weight. This is the feminist backlash, where many men will not financially support a woman’s desire to fulfill the traditional role of mother and wife. Men are no longer under any social pressures to marry or have children, or to get married if they have children out of wedlock. Men no longer tolerate the traditions of chivalry, courtship, nuclear family, and the responsibility of being the sole bread winner. Feminist men have no qualms with single parenting, cohabitating, or staying single. Feminism has allowed men to concentrate on themselves. Life for the feminist man is no longer about self-sacrifice, marriage, children, and a mortgage. They make use of their time in promiscuous sex or hobbies. A woman’s happiness, personal fulfillment, family aspirations, and financial security are her responsibility.
This is the main reason, the best selling book “The Rules,” no longer works in relationships. Men don’t abide by tradition in courtship and marriage, yet many women still seek these traditions. Women have removed the feminine aspects of being a women. Feminism and the sexual revolution threw away the sexual leverage of their grandmothers. Feminist men are now voting with their feet and you see lower marriage rates and higher divorce rates as a result. Dr. Warren Farrell wrote:
Men became more passive-aggressive. Men increasingly felt that their only relationship power was not getting into one. Women labeled this a fear of commitment, accused men of a fear of intimacy, and began making masculinity virtually synonymous with evil. (19)
Today, 50% of marriages end in divorce, birthrates are declining, and more men choose to live with a woman, or not marry at all. This is because the modern marriage is not empowering to men, nor does it fit the masculine gender role that men seek to fulfill. The modern marriage in America is a mirror image of the gender role shift that took place within the Black community due to slavery and Jim Crow. Many marriages today are beginning to look like long term homosexual (domestic partnership) arrangements rather than a traditional marriage. But in the modern marriage, economic empowerment was the catalyst.
Now the majority of Black males are not raised under traditional gender roles that foster nuclear families. Without a traditional male role to emulate, young men create their own idea of masculinity.
